Simpler to use
GA4 is powerful but notoriously difficult to use. Most website owners spend more time figuring out the interface than actually learning from their data. Custom reports, complex menus and a steep learning curve mean many people end up using a fraction of what it offers. Google also provides no real customer support, so when something isn’t working, you’re largely on your own.

More accurate data
This is one of the most overlooked reasons to switch. Google Analytics 4 misses a lot of traffic.
When consent banners are shown, an independent study found that GA4 fails to capture an average of 55.6% of traffic compared to Plausible. With tech-savvy audiences, the share of people blocking Google Analytics can reach 60%.
Plausible doesn’t collect personal data, so it doesn’t require a consent banner. That means it counts visitors who decline cookie prompts. It’s also not part of the adtech ecosystem, so most adblockers leave it alone. You can also proxy our script through your own domain as a first-party connection to bypass the ones that do target analytics scripts.
Beyond consent, Plausible has several built-in accuracy improvements:
- Known referrer spam and data center traffic is filtered out by default. We exclude around 32,000 data center IP ranges to prevent bot traffic from inflating your numbers. GA4 doesn’t handle this automatically, which leads to situations like Cookiebot users seeing constant spikes in direct traffic caused by bots scanning their site.
- We recover traffic from Android apps, which GA4 traditionally lumps into “Direct / None.” For sites with significant mobile traffic, this accounts for 10% or more of previously unattributed visits from apps like Gmail, Slack and Telegram.
- VPN and Tor traffic is grouped under “Anonymous VPN Service” to reduce noise in your location reports.

GDPR-compliant with no cookie banners needed
Google Analytics has become a legal liability in several countries. Since January 2022, data protection authorities in Austria, France, Italy, Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden have ruled that using Google Analytics violates GDPR. The rulings relate to EEA-US data transfers under Schrems II.
To stay compliant when using GA, you’re required to show cookie consent banners and maintain a detailed privacy policy covering your analytics tracking. That adds friction for every visitor, and many site owners turn to paid consent management platforms to handle it.
Plausible processes all visitor data on servers and infrastructure owned and operated by European providers. Your data never leaves the EU. Because Plausible doesn’t use cookies and doesn’t collect personal data, you don’t need consent notices for analytics at all. Your visitors can use your site without interruptions.

You own your data
Google Analytics is built by the world’s largest advertising company. The data it collects flows back to Google, which uses behavioral signals across millions of sites to power its ad business. When you install Google Analytics, your visitors’ data becomes part of that system. You can export reports, but Google retains the underlying data.
With Plausible, your website data belongs to you. It’s not shared with advertisers, not sold to third parties and not used to build behavioral profiles. Visitors aren’t tracked across sites and nothing leaves our infrastructure without your control.

Open source and transparent
Plausible is open source. Our source code is publicly available on GitHub, so anyone can read it, audit it and verify how data is handled.
Google Analytics is closed source. There’s no way to independently verify what happens to data once the GA script runs on your site. You have to trust Google.

Why isn’t Plausible free while Google Analytics is free?
Google Analytics is free because Google’s business runs on data. Collecting analytics from millions of websites is part of how they build the behavioral profiles that power their advertising network.
Plausible doesn’t participate in that model. No personal data is collected or analyzed. We don’t share data with anyone. We charge a subscription to cover our costs and keep the product running independently.
It’s also worth noting that “free” is relative. Google Analytics comes with hidden costs: the time spent learning a complex interface, the consent management tools you need to buy, the legal exposure in certain jurisdictions and the developer time required to maintain a compliant setup.
